Joe Cada wins 2009 WSOP Main Event

Date published: 2009-11-10

Joe Cada has won the 2009 World Series of Poker Main Event and created history by becoming the youngest WSOP Main Event Champion in history, only one year after Peter Eastgate took that crown.

Entering heads-up play against Darvin Moon, an amateur player, Cada held a chip lead of $135,950,000 to Moon’s $58,850,000. Immediately Moon won some chips, the very first hand of heads-up action actually.  Both players thought they were ahead when they saw the flop of 3s-Ks-2d, and when the Ad came on the turn Cada checked only for Moon to bet $10 million. Cada called instantly and the Kc on the river brought a check from both players, leaving Moon closing the gap in chip stacks.

Moon had the upper hand at the beginning of play and he actually won 14 of the first 21 hands. He was playing very aggressive and even 3 and 4-betting the young Joe Cada.

However Joe Cada knew he couldn’t let Moon walk over him and began playing back at him just as aggressively and after Moon doubled-up Cada, the young gun was in control and the final hand was just around the corner a few hands later.

It began with Cada raising to $3 million on the button, then Moon re-raised to $8 million. Cada then checked his cards again and seeing pocket nines he announced ‘all-in’. The decision was now Moon’s and he also re-checked his cards to see QdJd and he made the call. The atmosphere was electric and the crowd were all screaming and jumping up and down in anticipation of the flop. The flop came 8c-2c-7s, a blank for both players. Then the Kh turn came, again another blank. Moon now needed a Queen or Jack but the 7c sent Cada and his fans and friends into roars and screams as he made history.

Moon shook his head in disappointment but his achievement at this years Main Event has been extraordinary. Cada came over to Moon and shook his hand then Cada was awarded the 2009 WSOP Main Event bracelet, becoming the youngest Main Event Champion in history, and walking away with a massive $8.5 million as well as sponsorship from PokerStars.
