Edmond Hoyle – Poker Hall of Fame – 1979
Edmond Hoyle was born in 1672 and died in 1769, and earned his place as a charter inductee to the Poker Hall of Fame thanks to his books on poker. He was regarded as an expert on card games and wrote several books and writings about the game. If you have ever heard the saying, ‘According to Hoyle’, this refers to Edmond and is what many people said when discussing poker theories, relating to whjat Hoyles opinion was.
Not much is known about Edomd Hoyle, apart from that he was a trained barrister. He is believed to have worked as a whist tutor for the English Royal Family. It was at this point he began selling booklets he wrote which were based on strategies for the game. The booklet became more and more popular and eventually it began circulating throughout London without his authorisation.
This led Hoyle to write a new book, publish, and copyright it – ‘A Short Treatise On The Game Of Whist: Containing The Laws Of The Game And Also Some Rules’, in 1743. Again, this proved to be a huge success and Hoyle continued publishing books on games such as backgammon, chess and many more. In 1750 he had published another book which would become a market leader – ‘Mr. Hoyles Games Compleat’.
Edomd Hoyle became a charter inductee to the Hall of Fame in 1979 thanks to his publications and writings on a variety of card games.
