Chris Ferguson Bankroll Challenge | The Bankroll Challenge Rules

In 2006, Full Tilt Poker pro, Chris ‘Jesus’ Ferguson set himself a huge challenge of building a bankroll from $0 to $10,000. His reason for the challenge was that he wanted to prove to players that bankroll management is essential to being a successful poker player and that anyone with enough determination can achieve this.

The millionaire poker player ground his way through numerous freerolls for over 7 months to build his bankroll to $6.50. It wasn’t until November 26th, 2006, that Chris made a big breakthrough in his challenge. He entered a 683-player tournament for $1 and finished second for $104. He was now a tenth of the way there, but it took Chris another nine months to achieve his goal of $10,000. It took over a year but in September 2007 he successfully completed his challenge and donated his hard earned $10,000 to the Save the Children Foundation charity.

To achieve his goal he adhered to strict bankroll management rules which he set for himself. The rules were:

> He couldn’t buy-in to a sit and go or cash game for more than 5 percent of his bankroll, the only exception being at the micro-limits where he was allowed to buy-in to any game with a buy-in less than $2.50.

> He couldn’t buy-in to any MTT’s for more than 2 percent of his bankroll, the only exception being $1 MTT’s.

> If at any time in a cash game his stack represented more than 10 percent of his total bankroll, he had to leave the table when the blinds got to him.
